Due to the fact that they’re so fragile, we double and triple grade them to make very sure that our customers only receive the “best of the best” nuts. These salted cashews are slow-roasted until they become a crisp and golden brown. Their nutty and rich flavor makes them taste incredible! Cashews are the second most popular snack nut in the United States after peanuts. The cashew tree is native to Brazil. Portuguese explorers carried cashews from that country to India in the 16th century. The tree is a medium-sized tree, growing to a height of only 30 – 50 feet. It requires minimum care and grows well in a wide variety of soil types.
The cashew is kin to the mango. Its fruit is a red or yellow “apple” which looks vaguely like a mango. The nut itself is attached to the bottom of this fruit. The fruit is a highly-prized food item in Brazil and India but it must normally be eaten within one day of harvest so we in the U.S. do not usually get to enjoy it.
Cashews are shelled before export and the shell is then processed to recover a highly valuable but caustic liquid. This liquid is used for making medicines and as an ingredient in resins and other industrial products. More than 250 patents have been issued covering products made from this most-useful by-product.
